چکیده

Waterfowl managers are concerned that Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) breeding populations remain below conservation goals. Contrasting population growth trajectories for sympatric, phylogenetically similar and Ring-necked Duck collaris) at Erickson, Manitoba, Canada, prompted investigations might help explain these trends provide insight management of both species. We collected data (2008–2018) on productivity (broods/pair), water levels, hatching dates, age class-specific brood sizes, duckling daily survival rate, female response to disturbance compared results between species over time. was greater (0.42 versus 0.28, P < 0.01), dates were earlier (19 July 27 July, 0.001), females attempted hide their broods more often than did (16% 3%, but sizes smaller (Ia broods: 6.1 6.8, = 0.02; IIa 5.6 6.2, 0.02). Duckling rates similar. Productivity positively related annual change in pond level demonstrated change. There no support an association one- or two-year lagged levels. Consistent with previous findings, our suggest is a likely proximate cause the differing better nest placement may be contributing factor success observed.

Survival of Female Lesser Scaup: Effects of Body Size, Age, and Reproductive Effort

In birds, larger females generally have greater breeding propensity, reproductive investment, and success than do smaller females. However, optimal female body size also depends on how natural selection acts during other parts of the life cycle. Larger female Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) produce larger eggs than do smaller females, and ducklings from larger eggs survive better than those hatch...

Breeding Ecology of Sympatric Greater and Lesser Scaup (Aythya marila and Aythya affinis) in the Subarctic Northwest Territories

We studied the breeding ecology of greater and lesser scaup on islands of the North Arm of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories, and on the nearby mainland during 1990 – 98. The occurrence of nests of both species on the North Arm islands was determined primarily by the distribution of nesting gulls and terns and secondarily by habitat features. Nest parasitism was frequent on the islands, b...

Epizootic of coccidiosis in free-flying lesser scaup.

A coccidiosis epizootic has occurred in lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) at Bluestem Reservoir in eastern Nebraska during the spring in each of three recent years: 1976-1978. Losses peaked during the period from mid-March through April. As much as 29% of the peak population of scaup using the reservoir died. Necropsies of 72 of the nearly 1390 scaup that died revealed destruction and sloughing of ...
